Orange OTR120 Head Review -(January 1997)
Build Quality
Once the forgotten son of British amplification, the London-based company is now out of the trees and is once again a force to be reckoned with. Just as Marshall was a byword for the rock boom of the eighties, so today, no Britpop or Indie band would be seen dead without an Orange of some description as part of the backline; just ask Supergrass, Del Amitri, Skunk Anansie or Oasis. This OTR120 head is easily the most retro-looking of those featured here. It’s designed to produce gain and sustain for modern styles without compromising its inherent ’vintageness’. This is achieved, on paper at least, by a development called Oscillatory Transition Return (OTR, geddit?). Swathed in a suitably orange vinyl, the big knobs, chassis handles and classic livery ensure that the amp combines unique looks with bomb-proof construction.
Features
The front panel is straightforward in the extreme; bass, treble and presence pots assist gain and master controls in looking after one channel. The icons above each knob add to the character of the head, never failing to raise a smile ? especially the mountain (echo) above the jacks for the mono effects loop. To the left of the panel is a feature unique to Orange; a six-position Frequency Analysing Control. This more than makes up for the lack of a middle pot in the EQ, adding huge diversity to the OTR120.
Sound
The FAC gives you six totally different tonal starting points from which you can build up a sound. For reference, the setting furthest to the left gives you the most gain. The drive, although hardly in Mesa or Soldano territory, is satisfying enough and is of that lovely round vintage type that must make Gallagher and Co smile into their semis. With clever use of FAC, EQ and drive, I reckon bluesos will find the crunchy tone they’re after, just at the same time as country players discover a rich and melodic clean tone to add class to their picking. Strangely, for a 120W head, there’s not that much volume around, comparatively speaking, until you get the master up to around seven, when it really finds its voice. Don’t get me wrong, that’s hardly a problem, but don’t worry if you find you have to turn up the wick to get the best out of it.
